A nicely bred stallion of Lippitt and Old Vermont and Government lines.
His sire, Orcland Dondarling, was 7/8 Lippitt and Old Vermont High Percent lines. His dam was the lovely Lippitt mare, Anna Darling. Allenda, the dam of Ulendon who was the sire of Dondarling, was not a Lippitt but was of the same old lines as what made the Lippitts. The same is for the dam of Ulysses, Artemisia, who was definitely one of the High Percent Old Vermont mares.
Ulysses appears again behind the dam of Sultan. And those Old Vermont lines appear again behind the dam of Seneca Lady Esther whose sire was the Lippitt Cornwallis.
Brown Pepper, sire of Sultan's dam, was a noted show horse and sire. His sire was the famous Upwey Ben Don. Note that Ben Don's dam was the excellent producing mare Quietude, who was sired by the very good Troubadour of Willowmoor, and out of a mare who while not a Lippitt was of the same lines as behind the Lippitts. Audrey, the dam of Upwey King Benn, was also of the good Old Vermont lines. The Government program owed much to those mares of the High Percent Old Vermont lines.
Donene Pepper, dam of Sultan, was out of Trouvaille, who was sired by the great Gov't bred Trophy who sired many good breeding and show horses. Trouvaille was out of Gwen-S who was by Ulysses. Her dam was Golden Flash by the Lippitt Vigilant and out of a Saddlebred mare, Ladelle, who was often used by the Orcutts. Looking back up the pedigree, behind Seneca Lady Esther, there is a listing of "F H Orcutt Mare" as a Saddlebred. Likely that was also Ladelle.
Sultan had a heritage of strong breeding horses, both stallions and mares.
