There Really Are Gray Morgans, The Morgan Horse Magazine, August 1988

This is the article that saved the gray color for the breed. When I set out to research this, I had no idea what would happen. This article started from my own curiosity. Carol Guay was very generous with her time and correspondence with me. When she realized that she had the last known living breedable  gray Morgan, she set out to breed the mare again. The results were two gray colts (CW's Silver Ash by Hillside Stoney Ash, and CW's Sterling Silver by Todita) who are the source of most of our grays today. Later, the other gray mare was found and brought back to the breed to give us the Saycrest Frosty Miss line.

Below is the way the end of the article was printed in TMH. Below that is my cut and paste to put it all back in order. It was rather like putting a jigsaw puzzle together.

Uhlan. Western Livestock Journal, 1938

Sire of 17 registered get, most for Hearst's Piedmont prefix.
He was sire of Katrian. who was sire of Katrilan Prince, who sired Trillion, sire of Dapper Dan and Muscleman. Katrilin was also sire of Chuckanut Hacienda, dam of Classy's Pride who was sire for Sweet's and T-Bone Morgans.
Uhlan also sired Uhlan-Ro who sired with many of those having Ro as the last part of their name.
Also by Uhlan was Enowee, who sired many who bred on.
Hotcreek Cavalier is a descent of Uhlan's through Uhlan's son Pico-Chief.
Uhlan had many descendants who were in many breeding programs.

Hedlite. Western Livestock Journal, August 1938

Bred by Duval Williams, CA, Hedlite's parents were both out of the Richard Sellman bred mare, Joeb. She was by Joe Bailey by Headlight Morgan. Headlight Morgan was also the sire of Redwood Morgan, who was the sire of Blackhaux (sire of Hedlite), thus making Blackhaux inbred to Headlight Morgan.
Hedlite sired 20 registered Morgans; ten of those had progeny of their own.
Among those are:
--Dolly S., dam of Ramona prefix horses. Her son, Ramona Tomahawk, went to New York and sired for Delmaytion, Arona, Andrews, and others. Dolly's daughter, Ramona Redwing, had foals for Ramona, and also Rita Redwing who was dam for Malibu's Morgans. Another Dolly S daughter, Ramona Moonglow, had foals for Ramona and San De prefixes. Moonglow comes down to some Dragonfire prefix horses.
--Some Cresta prefix mares, some had foals.
--Hedlite's Bob E A, sire of more Hedlite prefix.
--Hedlite's Rudy T, sired some Ramona prefix horses. Ramona Black Hawk sired for Castle and others.
--Hedlite' Sonny Boy, sired some.

His progeny were used in various breeding programs and his descendants also. But, so sadly, very little of his blood, if any, comes to today. Yet, another loss to today's breeders.

J C Jackson Ranch. Western Livestock Journal March 1938

Two Morgan items on this page.

Sea Gull. Western Livestock Journal, March 1938

Bred by Thos. Adams, MT, Sea Gull does have much Standardbred (or as was called back in the 1800's, Trotter) blood. But if one keeps playing with the pedigree, going back behind the obvious, there is a lot of Morgan back there also.
Sea Gull was sire of 20 registered get.
Some of his descendants--
--Sun Dust, great grand son of Sea Gull. Owned by Louise Bates, WA. He sired 77 get, many for Bates' Skagit prefix.
--Classy Boy had Sea Gull twice behind his dam. He had 22 get including Big Rock, and Classy's Pride who is behind T-Bone Morgans.
--Highwood L. was a grandson of Sea Gull. He sired for Skagit and also Lad of Bo-Dot.
--King Pine was a great grandson of Sea Gull. He sired Walker and Swanton suffix Morgans and others.
--There were others by Sea Gull who bred on a ways.
It was said that Sea Gull was 5 gaited.

Blackhaux. Western Livestock Journal, March 1938

Bred by Duval Williams, also owner of Cuyamo who was featured also in Western Livestock Journal.
Blackhaux's parents were bred by Richard Sellman, TX.
Blackhaux had only 7 registered get.
One of these was Gold Dollar who sired so many Morgans for W T Carter's program. Many of those had Gold D in their names. Many of them bred onwards and there are lines to today.
Another Blackhaux son was Hedlite who sired many for the Cresta prefix and for Mary Smith's program, using the prefix of Hedlite. His daughter, Dolly S, was dam of Ramona Tomahawk, Ramona Redwing, Ramona Moonglow, and others. There are some lines today tracing back to Hedlite.

Chief Bugler. Western Livestock Journal. Jan. 1938

Bred by C X Larrabee, MT.
Sire of 36 registered get.
This is an intensely line bred pedigree. His parents were both sired by Jubilee de Jarnette. Both grand dams were sired by Lambert Boy. Indian Chief, by Bloods Black Hawk, appears 3 times. I did not count the number of times Black Hawk appears, but it is a lot.
Many of his get bred on down to today. J C Jackson kept many of his daughters to continue the breeding program for ranch Morgans.

Various Stallions from Western Livestock Journal, Jan. 1938

Don Juan-
Son of Querido. He was bred by Roland Hill and out of a Sellman mare.
He had 24 registered get.
His son, North Fork, sired in far Northern California, being bred for ranch Morgans. He had 20 registered get, including Norretia, dam of Norisk and Siskiyou Red; Shasta Girl, dam of Siskiyou Thor who was sire of Norisk. Siskiyou Thor was also sire of Re-Wind of Sundown who sired Juan Bravo, and Tia prefix. There were other descendants of North Fork who bred on to one extent or another.
Millbrae was another son of Don Juan who bred on and had breeding descendants.
Another son of Don Juan was Don Felipe who bred onwards.
Other get of Don Juan bred on to one extent or another.

Cuyamo--
Bred by Duval Williams, this early California stallion had his sire bred by Richard Sellman and the dam of his dam bred by Sellman.
He had only 11 registered Morgan get; and a large number of non-registered get.
I think that he has a line to today from his daughter Laydee. His daughter, Dulcet, also bred on quite a ways. Another daughter, Headlight Lady, also bred on a ways. They're others who bred on to one extent or another.

Querido was noted for his daughters who were retained by Roland Hill and then bred to Sonfield. He had get breed on for other breeders also.
