Hedlite Morgans. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/hedlites+tomboy
Mary Smith had an important breeding program with her horses coming to today.
There is a good photo of Tomboy on the above link. While he had no progeny, many of her horses did. Click on his sire and check out his progeny and trace some down. I wish we knew more about her and her Morgans.

Ken Carmen. Western Livestock Journal. 1942

Ken Carmen
https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ken+carmen
A wonderful Brunk pedigree with the amazing level of close breeding Brunk is known for.
Ken Carmen sired some very good Morgans while in Montana and some of those come down to today. Before he left the Midwest for the West, he left some good horses there also with some coming to today. It is a shame that we don't have more of his blood behind today's Morgans.

Pico Chief. Western Livestock Journal. 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/pico+chief
There is a very good photo of him on above link.
He had only 3 registered progeny with nothing breeding on.

Registry Report and Montabell Gift. Western Livestock Journal 1942

Note also the Pinto stallion, Tesoro, owned by Merle Little who was a major player in Morgans at that time.

Missouri King. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/missouri+king4
Bred by Elmer Brown, Kansas, as were his parents.
His maternal grandsire was a TB, as Brown did make a few rare crosses that way.
He had only one get, a daughter, who also had only one foal.

Various. Western Livestock Journal 1942

Some various things from these old magazines. I did mark an "X" next to the Morgan information. I have posted the entire pages because they are just fun to see.

I do not know the story, but all those Morgans who went to Arizona did not have, for the most part, registered foals in AZ.

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/suitor4
It is interesting to take his pedigree back further. There is more Morgan back there then one might first think.
No registered get.
Note also the ad from Jack Davis on the right side.

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/highland+larry
No registered get.
Bred by Thomas Adams, MT, he certainly had an old Montana pedigree.

Sun Down Morgan. Western Livestock Journal. 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/sun+down+morgan
The above photo is not a good one of this stallion. Go to the All Breed link listed here to see a much better photo. Also read the information (click on the circle i). Then study his pedigree. He is classic Sellman bred. Look at the level of close breeding thru out.
Of his get, some had at least one foal of their own. But it is his line from Midnite Sun that comes most strongly down to today as it reaches Californio.
[note--down his line of descent, there is a Morgan, El Tesoro. That is NOT the pinto shown here. Just a name in common.]

Vanguard. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/vanguard9
Vanguard had a wonderful pedigree. His sire was bred by Elmer Brown, one of the breed's Master Breeders. His paternal grandsire, Romanesque, was bred by another Master Breeder, Richard Sellman. The paternal grandam, Lemax, also Elmer Brown bred, was mostly the Old Midwest Family. Go back behind her to the stallion St. L and trace him back to two sons of Justin Morgan not often seen. Lemax's maternal grandam, Helen S, was a daughter of Headlight Morgan from when he was in Kansas before he went to Texas and Sellman's ranch.
Vanguard's dam was Old Midwest Family with a touch of Brunk. She also has St. L behind her. Kitty Edna's sire was the very good Winterset.
Vanguard had 13 registered get, and 6 had at least one foal of their own. But as a loss to the breed, only one of those bred on in any significant manner. This was his daughter, Van's Lady who had six foals with only one having any progeny. That one was Royce's Falcon. He sired many, including: Black Bart; Brown Leaf; Faith K R; Falconhaux; Fanchon Gold D; Farceur Morgan; Fonda KR. All of whom made  names for themselves in the Morgan world.
It is also worth taking a look at the other pedigrees of the horses mentioned above to see the sort of breeding behind these Morgans.
If you have a descendent of Vanguard, treasure that!

McAllister. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mcallister
McAllister--had a bit over 21 registered get. 12 of those had at least one foal of their own, and there are good lines coming down to today. He had get in the Midwest, some of those bred on, and he had get in California with some of those breeding on.
There is a photo of him on the above link.
Also, check out his progeny list to find some familiar names.
His sire was the great Jubilee King and his dam was sired by Charles Reade. Eve Oakley (Caven-Glo Morgans) told me that the Brunks went to Charles Reade for trotting speed. And that speed did pass onwards.

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/danny+boy6
Danny Boy has another great Brunk pedigree but no registered get.
The note with the pedigree on the above link says he was a driving horse.

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/upwey+roxana
The most interesting aspect of this pedigree is the paternal grandsire, Tarik, who had a high-percent Old Vermont linage.
Roxana had only one registered foal,, who had a Kedron prefix and was sired by McAllister. Kedron was  the prefix of Ina Richter of Santa Barbara, who owned Mcallister and had good get from him.

Danspar. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/danspar
Had 16 registered get, of whom only 4 had get of their own. Some of those bred further onwards, one coming down to the good mare Raya de Luna.
Be sure to click on his sire Sparbeau on the above link and check out the photo there. Sparbeau was bred by Elmer Brown, Kansas.
Deana A was bred by Roland Hill and out of a Sellman mare.

Montabell. Western Livestock Journal 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/montabell
Take a look at the close breeding through out his pedigree.
He had 43 registered get. His owner, O C Foster, added Gift to his name in ads, but he was registered as Montabell. Many of his get did breed on but not much comes to today. He was bred by Hearst Sunical Land & Packing Corp., San Simeon, CA

Chief of Chestnut. Western Livestock Journal, 1942

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/chief+of+chestnut
He had a marvelous pedigree.
Sadly, he had only 3 registered get and they did not breed on.
Bred by F A Fickert, Tehachapi, CA

Stillwater Indigo. TMH. April 1980

Full Lippitt
Sire of 99 registered get
https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/stillwater+indigo
Check the photo on the above link. When it came up for me, I just gasped, and said "That! That is why he was my favorite Lippitt and favorite Morgan stallion! I had forgotten just how good he was."
His conformation was excellent.
Lester did many things with him. Shows, trail rides, driving, flag bearer at shows.

I had one of his daughters, Ryegate Nubbinette, aka Snubbers. She was full sister to Meredith Bilirubin, Meredith Ebony, Ryegate Saphire, Ryegate Susana, Ryegate Syndicate, and Ryegate Major. Snubbers had 3 foals, one of which was SSM Bessie Nekomia who has descendants today.

Royalton Ashline. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/royalton+ashline
Full Lippitt
Sire of many.
First to win the AMHA Sports Horse award. He competed in Open Shows, Parades, Carriage Driving, Competitive Trail, and Eventing.

Kennebec Morgans. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/kennebec+challenge
a pedigree that is mostly Old Vermont, and a lot of that Old Vermont is Lippitt.

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/kennebec+silver+heels
Lippitt, some Government, a touch of Brunk, and a touch of WWF

Margaret Gardner bred Morgans for people to use. And just look at this awesome tandem.

Nemours Black Shadow. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/nemours+black+shadow
His sire was considered Brunk. The paternal grand sire was indeed Brunk. The paternal grand dam was also Brunk. But the dam of the paternal grand dam was Western Working Family, bred by the great breeder Elmer Brown of Kansas.
The maternal grand sire was that very good Government bred stallion Trophy.
The maternal granddam's was Michigan bred with the good old Michigan breeding behind her containing Lippitt, WWF, Gov't and Old Midwest Family.

Windcrest Bob B. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/windcrest+bob+b
Sire of 82 registered get.
On the above link, there is a better photo of him.
Standing at Porvenir Farm in New Mexico, he sired many good ones for them. While still back east, he had some good ones.
His dam was almost full Lippitt. The mare Lady Jane, on the bottom line, while having many Morgan behind her, is neither a Lippitt nor one of the Lippitt Foundation horses.
I believe that his strongly bred dam provided the typey look of so many of his get.

Marvelous Gem. TMH April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/marvelous+gem
This was a grand Morgan with excellent conformation and breed type.
Not known till many years later, he carried the splash gene, from his dam back to the likely source of Rhythm Lovely Lady.
Note his white markings.
He was 1/2 Lippitt as his sire was full Lippitt. His dam was 1/2 Old Midwest Family as her sire was purely that good old family. Her dam's dam then brings in Brunk, and Western Working Family from the LU Sheep Co.
As a side note, Emerald's Aristocrat was the Morgan owned by John Richard Young, author of two excellent books on horse training. I can remember reading his books as a teen, and later owning the books. There were photos of this stallion in at least one of the books.

Pill Peddler Bacchus. TMH April 1980

Pure Gov't breeding
Had 33 registered get

Historical from 1955. TMH April 1980

Devan Normandy. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/devan+normandy
Although it is generally considered that the Devans are pure Government breeding, they owe a large debt to the Western Working Family stallion, Hawk Jim, bred by Elmer Brown, Kansas.

Prince Charlie. Out of the Archives. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/prince+charlie4
There is a different photo on the above link.
He was a nicely bred, Old Vermont High Percent Morgan and was much the same breeding as what was to become Lippitt foundation horses.

Had 10 foals

Rimlo Black Valiant. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/rimlo+black+valiant
WOW! to this horse in many ways.
The above link has a good conformation shot that shows a laid-back shoulder, good Pillar of Support, good neck emergence, a good rear end, good everything.
And look at his pedigree, he is the result of a son to mother crossing!
He was mostly Brunk with some Western Working Family. The Western Working Family came from George Cross & Son, WY, and owes much to Brunk stallions.  Up behind his paternal grandsire, the mare Roany was a Standardbred.
He was the sire of multitudes.

Greentree Bonniejohn. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/greentree+bonniejohn
HIs pedigree is worth a look--east meets west.
Sire of 192 get, many breeding on.

Eaton's Seamaster. TMH. April 1980

https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/eatons+seamaster
19979 Grand National Champion Roadster to Bike
sired a few
His pedigree is mostly Gov't farm breeding with a touch of Brunk and Old Midwest Family.

Gay Mac. Western Livestock Journal May 1942

Note that the mares were in foal to the very good Brunk stallion, Squire Burger, who then went on to be sold to Mabel Owen in Mass. and become the cornerstone of her breeding program. He was also the sire of Whippoorwill Duke.
https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/squire+burger
Some more info and a fuzzy photo at above link.
