Sire of 27 registered get and an unknown number out of all sorts of mares.
His sire was the Government bred stallion, Bennington.
His dam, Carolyn, was mostly of the Old Vermont High Percent lines.
Her sire, Ethan Woodbury, was bred by F H Orcutt, East Burke, VT. His sire was that well-bred Lippitt forerunner, Ethan Allen 3rd. His dam, Lady Laura, was bred by Frank H. Orcutt, of West Burke, VT and was sired by the very typey Bob Morgan. Her dam was Laura, bred by Harrison Orcutt of West, Burke, VT. Laura is behind most Morgans of today, as she is behind Artemisia and others. Her sire was Morgan Tiger, another of the high percent Vermont Morgans. Laura's dam was line bred to Billy Root, that intensely Justin Morgan bred stallion.
It is well worth the time to take a trip back thru the pedigree of Ethan Woodbury.
Carrie was the dam of Carolyn. Her dam, the A E Hall mare, was sired by Ethan Allen 3rd. The AE Hall Mare's dam was the DD Hall Mare, sired by Black Morgan who was another of the Old Vermont High Percent Morgans. The dam of the DD Hall Mare had some blanks in her pedigree but still carried a cross to Billy Root and another to Sherman Morgan.
The sire of Carrie was a Standardbred named Billie. Going back into his pedigree I counted 11 crosses to Justin Morgan, and then I lost my place and quit.
It can be seen that once again the Gov't Farm was doing its trusted method of breeding to their lower percent stallions, a mare of the Old Vermont High Percent lines.
Swanton comes down to today thru his daughters Sweet Adaline, Brick and Elsie B, and son Swanee, as well as possibly Girlie Chief and Dona Rockwood, Black Swan bred on a ways and maybe further down than I had time to check.
This photo is from the Mabel Owen article posted yesterday as well as some further info on him in her article.
