Foaled 1944, bred by E W Roberts, who was a very important breeder of Morgans in California.
Red Gates was sired by the great Redman, who was bred by Hearst's San Simeon ranch.
Redman was by the very good sire, Mountcrest Sellman who had many that bred on. Mountcrest Sellman was bred by Richard Sellman and came to California in utero.
Redman's dam, Red Dot, was bred by Roland Hill and was by the Brunk stallion, Pongee Morgan. Red Dot's dam was also a Sellman bred, and was by his good sire, Red Oak.
Red Gates' sire, Bettina Allen, was bred in Kansas by that excellent breeder, Elmer Brown. She was sired by the California bred Tehachapi Allan who was in the Remount Service.
Bettina Allen's dam was also bred by Elmer Brown and was by Linsley, also in the Remount Service standing at Brown's ranch. Linsley brings in a line direct to General Gate without going through Bennington. Linsley's dam, Sunflower Maid, was also bred in Kansas by J M Wood of Meade. She was by Headlight Morgan from his time in Kansas before he went to Sellman in Texas. Sunflower Maid's dam was a well-bred mare with crosses back to Morrill.
The second dam of Bettina Allen, Spry, was another Elmer Brown bred. She was by his Old Midwest stallion, Dude Hudson, and out of the good producing mare, Donbelle, who was High Percent Old Vermont.
Red Gates had a pedigree with many of the great old breeders who were breeding for working ranch horses. He was used for trail riding and breeding, siring 23 get.
His get include--
--Ann Bolin, who went east to have foals for Big Bend and Tomi prefixes. While still in California, she had Major Bolin, who sired for Ben Lomond prefix and others.
--Bea Nickerson, dam of Mr. America and others. Mr. America had 41 registered get for R-J, Kelley's and other prefixes.
--Gojean, dam of Mariner prefix and others. She was dam of Mariner Top Gallant, sire of Rogue Bay Gambit, noted Oregon sire.
--Iris Wardlaw, dam for Impala prefix.
--Otto McClure, sire of Lizzie McClure (went east and produced there), Ramona Brave (sire of Braves, Kings, and Ramona prefix. There are lines to today.), Ramona Warrior (sire for Crestas and Ramona. His son Ramona Tomahawk went east to sire for Andrews, Delmaytion, and other prefixes. There are lines to today.).
--Poco Aljoy, who sired 5 before being gelded. He was a well known gelding in So. Calif. His daughter Orlaines Breezy was a good producing mare. Another daughter, Cinder Miss, produced for Rovira Morgans.
--Sunbonnet Sue, producing mare. Her son Sonnyboy Allen sired some.
The get of Red Gates certainly played a part in not only California breeding but other areas.
