Bred by H T Hineman, Dington KS
Way back, in the very early '80's, I met an older fellow who had worked on Hineman's ranch. He recalled the very nice Morgans bred there for ranch work, both on the home ranch and sold to others. Powerful was sold to Sutter Ranch to work and sire more working Morgans.
Powerful's sire, Chocolate, was bred by Elmer Brown, Kansas, and was an outstanding sire in his own right. Powerful's dam, Gold Pilot, was bred by Hineman, and was sired by a Thoroughbred and registered under the "X" Rule as a Morgan. The dam of Gold Pilot, Gold Fly, was bred by L L Dorsey of Kentucky, and later sold to Hineman. Dorsey was noted as a breeder of Morgans who had multiple crosses to that good sire, Golddust. Golddust, foaled in 1855, was a noted horse of his era. He sired horses who became Saddlebreds, or Standardbreds (registered in the American Trotting Record), or Morgans. It is said that he sired over 300 get, with 87 of those being Morgans. Despite these impressive numbers, he does not often come down to today.
Powerful sired 37 registered get. Few bred on but these include Carolyn S Sentney, Dot S Belle, Dot S Dolly, Dot S Sally. Some of these are found behind many Funquest Morgans.
